NTS hosts Loose Bones have been working behind the scenes putting together a pretty promising band… based on Fish Island, the three piece heavy psych outfit have been rehearsing together for less than a year and the results already sound extremely promising. They have a D.I.Y 6 track EP entitled “A Prescription For Mankind” dropping immently so keep your eyes peeled for that. In the mean time, check out the trippy video for ‘Life’s A Cake’ below…

Open Deck: Slackk      08/05/2013

podcast_slackk_mix

This Friday afternoon, grime instrumental don Slackk will be in the studio for this weeks Open Deck. We asked him a few questions to find out what he’s been up to recently and what he has in store for us…

How’s it going?

Yeah man I’m good; working too much and losing my hair rapidly but can’t complain.

I always ask this and tend to get reluctant answers but do you have a desert island disc?

Oh yeah, no hesitation on this one- A Love Supreme by Coltrane. Might be a bit of a cliché but I love that album more than any other, really can’t count how many times I’ve listened to it.

What have you got coming up release wise?

Well, I just recently had an EP called Minor Triads on UTTU, that was out last month. Then I’ve got an EP coming out soon on Local Action called Failed Gods; that’s going to mastering soon so should hopefully be out sometime in June. Got another couple of things due after that but no dates yet.

How did Grimetapes begin and what made you decide to share your hordes of tapes?

It was really the fact that I had so many sets just sitting around and I felt a bit selfish hoarding them away for myself. Plus I wanted more and thought this would be a good way to get people to send them onto me. It was.

When you started Grimetapes were you already DJing and producing or did it kind of inspire you to get started?

Nah I had been producing for a couple of years before that, although not really taking it too seriously. The DJing, a few years longer than that. Grimetapes had been going for about a year when I really started to try and make music properly, and actually send music out to people as opposed to it just sitting on the laptop gathering dust.

I’m a big fan of your Patrice & Friends alias -where did the idea for fusing boogie and footwork come from?

Ah man to be honest I was just playing about with some drum patterns. I’d been listening to a lot of footwork and writing my own patterns alongside that. I had writer’s block at the time-all my melodies were coming out terrible, if they did at all- and so was just playing with samples. The boogie stuff just fit perfectly. There was a track called Mystery by DJ Manny that was in the same vein, too. I got sent that after I’d made the first couple and it just fit so well into all the stuff I was making. Still play that.

Also the artwork is hilarious/amazing – where did you find it?

It’s an old Diane Arbus photo called “Mexican Dwarf in NY hotel room, 1974”. I saw that and knew he was Patrice, basically. He’s kind of taken on a life of his own now though. I wish I knew who the real bloke was.

What have you got planned for the show on Friday?

I just want to showcase a bit of new grime really. The new wave of producers are doing some great stuff and that’s basically all I’m playing.

There seems to be some really great instrumental grime around at the moment – who do you think isn’t getting the attention they deserve?

Man, where to start. Samename, Mr Mitch, K-Ro, JT The Goon, Nammy Wams (terrible name though), Splurt, Sirpixalot. There are so many though.

Any final words?

Just listen to the show and I hope you enjoy it, ha. Oh and come to Boxed, 24 th May at Plan B in Brixton. That’s our grime night, that.
